Box+Wood Gift Company Corporate Gifting Small Business Favorites for May

As May is coming to a close, we are rounding up some of our small business favorites that help keep our corporate gift box business running! From the coffee that we keep in our warehouse/ studio, to the books that I’m reading, think of this as a little sneak peek behind the scenes at Box+Wood Gift Company.

Small Business Favorites #1

Obsessed by Emily Heyward

I just finished reading Obsessed by Emily HeywardBuilding a Brand People Love from Day One, and I really loved it!

It is my goal to read at least one business-focused book per month, and I started this book last month, so I was a bit behind, but that is not because it isn’t an attention grabber! It’s really good and full of wonderful insights, and whenever I find the time to sit and read, I had a hard time putting it down.

Here is a summary of the book pulled from Amazon:

“Emily Heyward founded Red Antler, the Brooklyn-based brand and marketing company, to help entrepreneurs embed brand as a driver of business success from the beginning. In Obsessed, Heyward outlines the new principles of what it takes to build and launch a brand that has people queuing up to buy it on opening day. She takes you behind the scenes of the creation of some of today’s hottest new brands, showing you:

  •  How Casper was able to upend the mattress industry by building a beloved brand where none had existed before

  •  How the dating app Hinge won a fanatical user base and great word-of-mouth with the promise that the app was “designed to be deleted”

  •  Why luggage startup Away, now valued at $1.4 billion, could build their brand around love of travel by launching with just one product–a hard-shell carry-on suitcase–rather than a whole range of luggage offerings.

Whether you’re starting a new business, launching a new product line, or looking to refresh a brand for a new generation of customers, Obsessed shows you why the old rules of brand-building no longer apply, and what really works for today’s customers”

A lot of the books I read are focused on small businesses or the inside workings of a business, so I enjoyed reading about branding and messaging from the perspective of newer, venture-backed brands and what it takes to really stand out in today’s market. This book gave me a lot to think about it started a lot of “out of the box” conversations at work about how we do things in terms of brand positioning and messaging, which are always fun to dive into!

Small Business Favorites #2

Cometeer Coffee

Another favorite thing of ours this past month is Cometeer Coffee! If you haven’t heard of Cometeer Coffee before, they take coffee from some of the best roasters across the country, freeze it in a concentrated form (like an espresso shot) and then send it to you on dry ice.

We’ve been receiving Cometeer shipments all year, and liked them from americanos and lattes, but not that it is iced-coffee season, we are OBSESSED. You just thaw your delicious coffee shot, pour over a little bit of milk or dairy alternative, and enjoy the best iced-coffee ever.

The daily crew (Brooke & I) are team #darkroast, and we love the Counter Culture and the Go Get Em Tiger the most. Let me know if you try Cometeer & love it as much as we do! It is an easy pick as one of our small business favorites!

Small Business Favorites #3

The Greg Mckeown Podcast

If you have read Essentialism or Effortless, you already know Greg Mckeown. I love his less-is-more principles and have really been enjoying his newly minted “The Greg Mckeown Podcast.”

The podcast is focused on negotiation, which isn’t something I would usually seek out a podcast on, but I have been enjoying the topic and his knowledge so much more than I would have imagined! As someone with a fairly low conflict life, I wouldn’t have thought I needed to add any negotiation tactics into my day-to-day life, but I have put what I’ve been learning to work multiple times already.

Small Business Favorites #4

Tonic Websites

If you have been around for a while, you know that earlier this year we launched a new website! While we’ve talked about it a good bit, it is still going to get a place on our favorite things for May!

Our website is a Tonic website, and we could not be happier with it! Not only does it look great on mobile and desktop, but it is also extremely easy for us to update in-house, which is great for quickly updating copy and pictures. If you are looking to update your website, I cannot recommend Tonic enough! Follow the link to learn more and get an amazing website of your own! – Tonic!
